Julia Portillo is the Finance Director at JMA, with over eight years of experience in the public and non-profit sectors. She is a long-time advocate for social and economic justice. Her interest in the labor movement started in her teen years when she learned to interpret for her mother, who at that time was a union member of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers
At JMA, Julia manages all financial and budgetary matters and was instrumental in leading JMA’s organizational transition to become an independent 501(c)(3) entity. Julia works with the executive team to develop internal policies and procedures and help maintain a healthy, sustainable organization.
Prior to JMA, Julia worked with Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) ─ Building Wreckers Local 1421. At LIUNA, Julia created effective, fundamental office policies, procedures, and systems to help Local 1421 become a high-functioning organization. Beyond this role, Julia work closely with a team of organizers to mobilize all laborers for actions.
In 2016, Julia moved to the West Coast with her two dogs and has enjoyed exploring California while deepening her knowledge on issues that are affecting working families in her community.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Political Science & Sociology Major (2017) and a Secretary-Treasurer Certificate from LIUNA Training Center.
