What You’ll Do ─  Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Southern Director runs campaigns to win good jobs, access to training, and community benefits agreements for the Black, Latino and white workers employed at global manufacturers based in Alabama and Mississippi. They are responsible for developing and supervising the Southern Team and overseeing the Southern campaigns and programmatic work. The Southern Director plays a critical role in engaging key stakeholders around JMA’s vision to advance racial equity and economic and environmental justice.

  • Develop and manage a staff team from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, holding them accountable to achieving programmatic goals and providing opportunities for professional development
    • Supervise research staff in the development of reports, fact sheets, white papers, and other campaign materials
    • Supervise organizing staff in moving workers and community members to fight for Community Benefits Agreements that guarantee access to all workers to good manufacturing jobs, including job training, in Alabama
  • Create and drive strategy, and manage comprehensive campaigns, in order to win community benefits agreements campaigns with global corporations based in the South
  • Collaborate with JMA’s other campaign teams to drive policy in market-shaping regions that support southern workers and communities
  • Analyze evolving political landscape and stakeholder relationships and lead team in navigating dynamics within state, city, community and coalition spaces
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures – both timely attention to individual administrative responsibilities as well as oversight to ensure the understanding and compliance of team members
    • Lead in implementing policies and procedures to support the work and development of team members, including developing and managing team budget and conducting timely performance evaluations and discussion of benchmarks
  • Contribute to JMA’s organizational development by assisting with fundraising, providing peer evaluations, facilitating internal trainings and participating in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 20% of time).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor message to clearly and persuasively communicate JMA’s work to the public and inspire people to support our work
  • Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners
  • Ability to continually assess and thoughtfully develop the leadership of team members through regular 1:1s, setting of annual SMARTIE goals (strategic, measurable, ambitious, realistic, time-bound, inclusive and equitable) and benchmarks and annual performance evaluations
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions
  • Ability to participate in a culture of feedback with a commitment to continually strengthening practice of “courageous conversations,” including:
    • communicating clearly and directly with colleagues
    • being proactive to resolve conflicts and misunderstandings, especially across differences
    • consistently strengthening ability and practice in giving and receiving both positive and constructive feedback to support each other’s learning and personal growth
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, solve problems and overcome obstacles to get the work done
  • Must maintain flexibility: be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and adapt quickly to change
  • Ability to multitask, work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Familiarity with GoogleSuite

After 1 year

  • Deep understanding of political landscape and dynamics within the city, state and community and coalition spaces
  • Understanding of JMA’s strategic plan and the work of other teams and ability to initiate cross team collaboration as needed to strengthen the overall ability of JMA to achieve our strategic goals
  • Facilitation skills and an ability to unite the team on overall goals, strategic direction and campaign/work plans

Other Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards

What Else You Should KnowCompensation/Benefits: 

  • Salary Range $85,000 – $100,000
  • Employer pays 100 percent of medical, dental, and vision premium
  • Generous PTO: 12 days paid vacation, 12 sick days, 9 federal holidays, 12 personal days per year, 2 floating holiday

  • JMA contributes 5% of the employee salary towards their 401k plan after 6 months of employment
